What causes hair loss? There are several reasons why a person, either male or female can lose their hair. In my case, it was a symptom of the immune response my body had to the COVID-19 virus. However, there are many other reasons for hair loss. Vitamin deficiencies, stressful/traumatic event, thyroid problems, hereditary factors, radiation and certain medications, hormonal changes like menopause or testosterone use, immunological issues, etc are possible causes of hair loss in both men and women. Some vitamin deficiencies that can directly cause hair loss are vitamin B12, folate, riboflavin and biotin. Excessive exposure to certain heavy metals such as Mercury can also be associated with hair loss. There have been many reports of hair loss after recovering from COVID-19 as well. This is thought to be linked to the immune system response to the virus itself.
What should you do if you begin to experience sudden, unexplained hair loss? You should see your physician if you begin to experience sudden hair loss that is not a genetic predisposition in your family. Your provider will probably want to do some bloodwork to make sure there is not an underlying health issue causing the hair loss. Once health issues and medications are ruled out you can begin the process of deciding what to do to correct the hair loss.
Different surgical and non-surgical treatments are available when experiencing hair loss. Surgical hair replacement can be a good but costly option. The underlying cause of the hair loss must be corrected before attempting any hair regenerative therapy. Also, there are the costs and risk of surgery that many people would like to avoid. If you are not interested in surgery, you can opt for non-invasive treatments such as micro needling with PRP and exosomes into the scalp with regular LED light therapy.
What is PRP you may ask? PRP is a natural, non-invasive treatment that takes a small amount of your blood, spins it in a centrifuge and then uses the plasma and the growth factors it contains to stimulate the hair follicles and scalp to repair, replenish, and regenerate. PRP can bring back fuller, thicker hair growth. The treatment involves three sessions that take less than an hour and patients usually report minimal pain. The treatments are given two weeks apart to improve and regenerate the areas of hair loss and achieve consistent results. You can even wash your hair the very same night and return to work the same day.
