What are the most important thing you can do today to be healthier?
All of us want to look and feel better about ourselves. We are all in search of what makes us feel healthier, younger, more energetic, etc. Sometimes there is so much information being thrown at us in the news, magazine articles, television programs and social media that it may leave you feeling confused and a little overwhelmed.
I would say that the two best things you can do to improve your health are a healthy diet and exercise. These two things are at the very foundation of health.
Your body is a complex network of living cells that come together to function in different ways. Those cells require food/fuel in order to work properly. Not just any food/fuel though is enough. The food you eat needs to be a balance of protein, fats and carbohydrates that contain the vitamins and nutrients that your body needs. Before fast food was invented, we nourished our bodies with fruits, vegetables and proteins that were grown in more traditional, healthier ways. Now, with fast food and processed foods we have moved away from the “clean eating” approach and moved towards convenience that requires processing food to make it last longer which in turn takes away from the vitamins, nutrients and health benefits that some foods contain and instead replaces them with chemicals and preservatives.
Why exercise?
Studies have shown that simple exercise such as walking for half an hour, three times a week can prevent the onset of diabetes for up to 10 years. Not only does exercise improve cardiovascular health, reduce glucose levels and improve energy, it adds to the emotional wellbeing of a person. I don’t think I have ever heard anyone complain that they feel more depressed after exercising. Something so simple as a thirty minute brisk walk can be of immense benefit to everyone but it has to get done.
What is semaglutide and how does it work?
Semaglutide is a medication that was original developed to treat type 2 diabetes. It goes by the brand name Ozempic, Wegovvy or Rybelsus. It comes in a liquid form that you can inject subcutaneously once a week or a pill form that you can take daily. Semaglutide is part of the class of drugs known as GLP-1 Agonists. It reduces the amount of Glucagon your body produces, slows down your digestion in your stomach and reduces your appetite. The patient eats less and therefore loses weight. A history of cancer, excessive alcohol consumption and pregnancy are all among some of the contraindications to taking this medication.
Vitamin and Mineral Supplementation
IV vitamin and mineral supplementation works by introducing specially formulated liquid vitamin and mineral supplements into a bag of normal saline fluid. A catheter is then placed into the vein and the fluid is infused into your blood stream through the vein. This can provide some patients increased energy levels, reduction in appetite and an increased hydration and appearance of the skin and improved anemia and vitamin/mineral levels in the body that are necessary for everyday functions. These vitamin and mineral supplements can also be given as injections into the muscle.
